What is a mushroom tincture?

A mushroom tincture is a liquid extract made by soaking dried mushroom in alcohol. Dual extraction adds a hot water decoction to pull the compounds alcohol leaves behind.

The calculator gives you the milliliters of alcohol and water from the mushroom weight, the ratio and the alcohol strength. It works for reishi, lion's mane, turkey tail, chaga and cordyceps.

How do I use the tincture calculator?

  1. Pick the extraction type: alcohol, water or dual.
  2. Enter the grams of dried mushroom.
  3. Pick the ratio. 1:5 means 5 ml of solvent per gram of mushroom.
  4. Pick your alcohol strength and, for dual extraction, the final strength you want.
  5. Tap Calculate and follow the steps in the result.

Example: how much alcohol and water for a 100 g dual extraction?

With 100 g of dried mushroom, a 1:5 ratio, 60% alcohol and 25% final strength:

Total solvent500 ml
Step 1 · Alcohol208.3 ml (60%) + 50 g
Step 2 · Water291.7 ml + 50 g
Step 3 · Final alcohol~25%

Once combined you get 500 ml at about 25% alcohol.

This calculator gives preparation ratios. If you take medication, are pregnant or have a health condition, ask your doctor before taking mushroom extracts.

Frequently asked questions

What ratio is used for a reishi tincture?

The most common is 1:5: 5 ml of solvent per gram of dried mushroom. Woody mushrooms such as reishi or chaga also use 1:8 or 1:10.

Which alcohol works for tinctures?

Food-grade alcohol from 40% to 95%: vodka, cane spirit or grain alcohol. Never use denatured or rubbing alcohol.

Why 25% alcohol at the end?

At 20% to 25% alcohol the extract keeps for months without refrigeration.

How long is the maceration?

The calculator uses 30 days for the alcohol and 2 hours of water decoction. Shake the jar daily during maceration.
